The State Journal just wrote a nice article about the upcoming Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival and how Fairmont in West Virginia is getting ready for such. Since we have already written about the Festival on numerous occasions and this is a really good article, you really need to go and read it yourself. Here's a little excerpt.
"Everything is free except the cooking school, which has been renamed Cucina Festival. Tickets are $15," Shannon said.
The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a southern Italian tradition celebrated on Christmas Eve by many Italians in the United States. The number of fish dishes a family serves varies but seven is said to be symbolic of the sacraments of the Catholic Church.
A person doesn't have to be Catholic to serve the meal -- Martin's family isn't -- and he or she doesn't have to be Italian to enjoy the festival that has sprung up in Fairmont to celebrate the Feast.
Martin's brother Robert Tinnell grew up to be a filmmaker and graphic novelist who wrote a comic strip about the Feast of the Seven Fishes. He set it in a fictional town modeled after his hometown of Rivesville in Marion County. In 2005, the comic strip was compiled into a book with recipes edited by Tinnell's wife, Shannon.
