Gina Cascone has a great chapter on the subject of having "balls" and all that pertains with having them in her book "Life al Dente." She goes into detail, the trials and tribulations of growing up female in an Italian American home.
Ironically, I vividly remember we had a girl in our neighborhood very much like Gina. Real tough, always trying to prove she had the "balls" to hang with the boys. Her name was Janine, but we all called her "Jay." It was kinda funny when us guys actually realized that she was a girl. It really didn't matter for a long time, but it was almost like a switch for us one day.
I'm sure it must have killed her when that switch was turned because it was never the same. Anyhow, I urge all to give that a read, theres also exceprts of another chapter that alludes to what I mentioned. It's funny and amazingly insightful as well.
